 Durga puja:

Durga puja , also referred to as Durgotsava  or Sharadotsav is an annual Hindu festival in South Asia that celebrates worship of the Hindu goddess Durga. 




Durga Puja festival marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the evil buffalo demon Mahishasura. Thus, Durga Puja festival epitomizes the victory of Good over Evil.

It refers to all the six days observed as Mahalaya, Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami and Vijayadashami. The dates of Durga Puja celebrations are set according to the traditional Hindu calendar and the fortnight corresponding to the festival is called Devi Paksha ( Fortnight of the Goddess). Devi Paksha is preceded by Mahalaya (the last day of the previous fortnight Pitri Paksha, ‘Fortnight of the Forefathers’), and is ended on Kojagori Lokkhi Puja (‘Worship of Goddess Lakshmi on Kojagori Full Moon Night’).

2016 Durga Puja


Durga Puja is a famous Hindu festival when Goddess Durga is worshipped. Durga Puja is also known as Durgotsava. Durgotsava refers to all five days festivity and these five days are observed as Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami and Vijayadashami. (According to Hindu religious texts Durga Puja, including Chandi Path, should begin from the next day of Mahalaya Amavasya. Mahalaya is the most important day of Pitru Paksha, when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors, is not considered for starting any auspicious work.)

Most states except West Bengal do Ghatasthapana on Pratipada which is the next day of Mahalaya Amavasya. Ghatasthapana is equivalent to Kalparambha during Durga Puja when Goddess Durga is invoked. Kalparambha mostly falls on Shashthi Tithi during Devi Paksha. According to regional customs and beliefs Durga Puja during Shardiya Navratri varies from nine days to one day only which is also mentioned in Dharmasindhu.

The Goddess Durga arrives on the Earth on the first day of Devi Paksha which starts on the next day of Mahalaya Amavasya during Pitru Paksha. She departs on Durga Visarjan day. The weekdays when she arrives and departs are significant and considered as omen of coming time.

 In India:

* Durga Puja is widely celebrated in the Indian states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Tripura and West Bengal, where it is a five-day annual holiday.

* In West Bengal and Tripura, which has a majority of Bengali Hindus, it is the biggest festival of the year. Not only is it the biggest Hindu festival celebrated throughout the state, it is also the most significant socio-cultural event in Bengali society.

* Apart from eastern India, Durga Puja is also celebrated in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.

* Durga Puja is also celebrated as a major festival in Nepal.

* Also in Bangladesh all over the places of Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Bogra and other major places and all the villages of Bangladesh where the 20% population is Hindu.3 day National Holiday is being declared and most of the educational institutions remain closed as it is one of the major national festival also in Bangladesh which is widely celebrated and peoples from all religion participate in the program.
* Nowadays, many diaspora Bengali cultural organizations arrange for Durgotsab in countries such as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Singapore and Kuwait, among others. In 2006, a grand Durga Puja ceremony was held in the Great Court of the British Museum.

"Akaal Bodhon" or "Akal Bodhan ":

 
The actual worship of the Goddess Durga as stipulated by the Hindu scriptures falls in the month of Chaitra, which roughly overlaps with March or April and is called Basanti or Vasantic Durga Puja. This ceremony is not observed by many and is restricted to a handful in the state of West Bengal.

The more popular form, which is also known as Sharadiya (Autumnal) Durga Puja, is celebrated later in the year with the dates falling either in September or October. Since the Goddess is invoked at the wrong time, it is called "Akaal Bodhon" in Bengali. "Akaal Bodhon"means out-of-season ('akal') worship ('bodhan').






Thus goes the story of Lord Ram wanted to get the blessings of Goddess Durga before beginning the war with Ravana. Lord Rama, first worshipped the 'Mahishasura Mardini' or the slayer of the buffalo-demon, by offering 108 blue lotuses and lighting 108 lamps, at this time of the year.Therefore he invoked Goddess Durga during Ashwin (October – November). This is why the Durga Puja during October is also known as Akaal Bodhon or untimely invocation.

Durga Puja in Eastern India:

In eastern India, especially in Bengal, the Durga Puja is the principal festival during Navaratri. It is celebrated with gaiety and devotion through public ceremonies of “Sarbojanin Puja” or community worship. Huge decorative temporary structures called “pandals” are constructed to house these grand prayer services, followed by mass feeding, and cultural functions. The earthen icons of Goddess Durga, accompanied by those of Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kartikya, are taken out on the tenth day in a triumphal procession to the nearby river, where they are ceremonially immersed. Bengali ladies give an emotion-charged send-off to Durga amidst ululations and drumbeats. This marks the end of the goddess’ brief visit to the earth. As Durga leaves for Mount Kailash, the abode of her husband Shiva, it’s time for “Bijoya” or Vijayadashami, when people visit each other’s homes, hug each other and exchange sweets.

Durga Puja in Western India:


The Garba & Dandia Dance of Gujarat





People in western India, especially in Gujarat, spend the nine nights of Navaratri (nava = nine; ratri = night) in song, danceks hit one another. The dance has a complex rhythm. The dancers begin with a slow tempo, and go
and merriment. Garba is a graceful form of dance, wherein women dressed in exquisitely embroidered choli, ghagra and bandhani dupattas, dance gracefully in circles around a pot containing a lamp. 




The word “Garba” or “Garbha” means “womb”, and in this context the lamp in the pot, symbolically represent life within a womb. Besides the Garba is the “Dandia” dance, in which men and women participate in pairs with small, decorated bamboo sticks called dandias in their hands. At the end of these dandias are tied tiny bells called ghungroos that make a jingling sound when the stic into frenzied movements, in such a manner that each person in a circle not only performs a solo dance with his own sticks, but also strikes his partner’s dandias in style!

Durga Puja in Northern India:
 

Dusshera & Ramlila

 Dusshera, as the name suggests occurs on the “tenth” day following the Navratri. It is a festival to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, and marks the defeat and death of the demon king Ravana in the epic Ramayana. Huge effigies of Ravana are burnt amidst the bangs and booms of firecrackers.





In northern India, especially in Varanasi, Dusshera overlaps with “Ramlila” or “Rama Drama” – traditional plays in which scenes from the epic saga of the mythical Rama-Ravana strife are enacted by professional troupes.

 Durga Puja in Southern India:

The Dusshera celebration of Mysore in southern India is a veritable extravaganza! Chamundi, a form of Durga, is the family deity of the Maharaja of Mysore. 





It’s a wonderful scene to watch the grand procession of elephants, horses and courtiers wending a circuitous way to the hilltop temple of Goddess Chamundi!

Durga Puja in Bengal:
         

The ceremonial worship of the mother goddess, is one of the most important festivals of India. Apart from being a religious festival for the Hindus, it is also an occasion for reunion and rejuvenation, and a celebration of traditional culture and customs. While the rituals entails ten days of fast, feast and worship, the last four days - Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami - are celebrated with much gaiety and grandeur in India and abroad, especially in Bengal, where the ten-armed goddess riding the lion is worshipped with great passion and devotion.


The First Durga Puja in Bengal:

The first grand worship of Goddess Durga in recorded history is said to have been celebrated in the late 1500s. Folklores say the landlords or zamindar of Dinajpur and Malda initiated the first Durga Puja in Bengal. According to another source, Raja Kangshanarayan of Taherpur or Bhabananda Mazumdar of Nadiya organized the first Sharadiya or Autumn Durga Puja in Bengal in c 1606.

The 'Baro-Yaari' Puja and Beginning of Mass Celebration:

 
The origin of the community puja can be credited to the twelve friends of Guptipara in Hoogly, West Bengal, who collaborated and collected contributions from local residents to conduct the first community puja called the 'baro-yaari' puja or the 'twelve-pal' puja in 1790. The baro-yaari puja was brought to Kolkata in 1832 by Raja Harinath of Cossimbazar, who performed the Durga Puja at his ancestral home in Murshidabad from 1824 to 1831, notes Somendra Chandra Nandy in 'Durga Puja: A Rational Approach' published in The Statesman Festival, 1991.

Origin of 'Sarbajanin Durga Puja' or Community Celebration:

 
"The baro-yaari puja gave way to the sarbajanin or community puja in 1910, when the Sanatan Dharmotsahini Sabha organized the first truly community puja in Baghbazar in Kolkata with full public contribution, public control and public participation. Now the dominant mode of Bengali Durga Puja is the 'public' version," write M. D. Muthukumaraswamy and Molly Kaushal in Folklore, Public Sphere, and Civil Society. The institution of the community Durga Puja in the 18th and the 19th century Bengal contributed vigorously to the development of Hindu Bengali culture.

British Involvement in Durga Puja:

 
The research paper further indicates that "high level British officials regularly attend Durga Pujas organized by influential Bengalis and British soldiers actually participate in the pujas, have prasad, and even salute the deity, but 'the most amazing act of worship was performed by the East India Company itself: in 1765 it offered a thanksgiving Puja, no doubt as a politic act to appease its Hindu subjects, on obtaining the Diwani of Bengal'. (Sukanta Chaudhuri, ed. Calcutta: the Living City, Vol. 1: The Past) And it is reported that even the Company auditor-general John Chips organized Durga Puja at his Birbhum office. In fact, the full official participation of the British in the Durga Puja continued till 1840, when a law was promulgated by the government banning such participation."

Durga Puja Comes to Delhi:

 
In 1911, with the shifting of the capital of British India to Delhi, many Bengalis migrated to the city to work in government offices. The first Durga Puja in Delhi was held in c. 1910, when it was performed by ritually consecrating the 'mangal kalash,' symbolizing the deity. This Durga Puja, which celebrates its centennial in 2009, is also known as the Kashmere Gate Durga Puja currently organized by the Delhi Durga Puja Samiti in the lawns of Bengali Senior Secondary School, Alipur Road, Delhi.




Evolution of the 'Pratima' and the 'Pandal':

The traditional icon of the goddess worshiped during the Durga Puja is in line with the iconography delineated in the scriptures. In Durga, the Gods bestowed their powers to co-create a beautiful goddess with ten arms, each carrying their most lethal weapon. The tableau of Durga also features her four children - Kartikeya, Ganesha, Saraswati and Lakshmi. Traditional clay image of Durga or pratima made of clay with all five gods and goddesses under one structure is known as 'ek-chala' ('ek' = one, 'chala' = cover).

There are two kinds of embellishments that are used on clay -

sholar saaj and daker saaj.


1.Sholar saaj -- 


In this, the pratima is traditionally decorated with the white core of the shola reed which grows within marshlands. 

2. Daker saaj --  

As the devotees grew wealthier, beaten silver (rangta) was used. The silver used to be imported from Germany and was delivered by post (dak). Hence the name daker saaj.

The huge temporary canopies - held by a framework of bamboo poles and draped with colorful fabric - that house the icons are called 'pandals'. Modern pandals are innovative, artistic and decorative at the same time, offering a visual spectacle for the numerous visitors who go 'pandal-hopping' during the four days of Durga Puja.

Ahoi Ashtami fasting day falls approximately eight days before Diwali Puja and four days after Karwa Chauth. Similar to Karwa Chauth, Ahoi Ashtami is more popular in North India. This day is also known as Ahoi Aathe because fasting for Ahoi Ashtami is done during Ashtami Tithi which is the eighth day of the month.

Similar to Karwa Chauth, Ahoi Ashtami is a strict fasting day and most women abstain even from water throughout the day. On Ahoi Ashtami mothers hold a fast from dawn to dusk for the long life and well-being of their sons. Fast is broken during twilight after sighting stars in the sky.

 The Banya-Marwari (traders) community in Rajasthan has held on to this tradition quite religiously over centuries. In the age of ‘readymade’ items though quite a few Marwari households which buy a ready-made Ahoi Mata calendar, there are still those who retain the age-old tradition of making the Mother’s sketch with the help of geru (red powder) diluted with water to make a paste. Her picture is either hung (if it is a calendar) or made on the wall.

Ahoi Ashtami Fast Story - 1



Once upon a time, there lived a woman in a village. She had seven sons. One day she went to the forest to bring soil for the renovation and painting of her home (this was in the month of kartik just before the Hindu festival Deepawali . She started digging soil with axe nearby a den. Suddenly the woman's axe fell on the cub in the den and the cub died. The woman felt very sorry and sympathetic. She took soil from the forest and came back. 
   
 Few days later, all her seven sons died within a year. She was very sad. One day she narrated her woes to old ladies in her village, she was crying and told them that she didn't commit the sin and it happened unintentionally. She narrated to the ladies that once when she was digging for the soil in the forest her axe fell on the cub and thereafter within a year all my seven sons died. The ladies appreciated for confessing her guilt and then these ladies told that by confessing the sin she has atoned her half of the sin.
They suggested the woman to pray the goddess Ashtam
i Bhagwati by sketching the face of the cub. By the grace of god your sin will cast off. The woman kept fast on the Kartik Krishna Ashtami and then onwards she started praying and keeping fast regularly. By the power of her prayer the God's grace showered and she could get back her all seven son. Since then, it became a ritual to worship the goddess Ahoi Ashtami Bhagwati religiously every year.

 Ahoi Ashtami Fast Story - 2

 The story of Siau mata (mother fox) is told by one of the women to everyone;

Once upon time their was a potter family. They had two brothers, whose families lived in one house. One day, the younger brother asked his wife to dig up and bring clay pots for a pre-Diwali market. While digging, she accidentally killed 7 baby foxes with her spade. Their mother came out, very angry. She laid a curse on the potter family "your family will die, because you have killed mine". The woman cried, asking the foxes forgiveness, "I will do anything you want, but please spare my family". The fox said, "you will have to give me seven of your children, as they are born, as a compensation". The woman agreed and returned home feeling very sad.

Following this incident, whenever she had a child, she took it and gave it to the mother fox. Every year on Hoi Ashtami, all other women of the house celebrated and everyone was happy, except her. One day, a sage came to their house and told her that if she prayed to Hoi mata with full devotion, she may be able to reverse the curse pt upon her by the fox. The next year, the woman fasted and prayed with complete devotion. Hoi mata was pleased. She requested the mother fox to return the woman’s children, “she has suffered enough”. Fox agreed and returned the woman’s children. Her family was complete. Once again her home was filled with the noise and laughter of children.


Women finish the story saying, “O Hoi mata, look after my children, as you looked after hers”.

श्री अहोई अष्टमी व्रत कथा

एक साहुकार था जिसके सात बेटे थे, सात बहुएँ तथा एक बेटी थी दीवाली से पहले कार्तिक बदी अष्टमी का सातो बहुएँ अपनी इकलौती ननद के साथ जंगल में मिट्टी खोद रही थी। वही स्याहू (सेई) की माँद थी। मिट्टी खोदते समय ननद के हाथ से सेई का बच्चा मर गया। स्याहु माता बोली कि मैं तेरी कोख बाँधूँगी। तब ननद अपनी सातों भाभियों से बोली कि तुममें से कोई मेरे बदले अपनी कोख बँधवा लो। सभी ने कोख बंधवाने से इन्कार कर दिया परन्तु छोटी भाभी सोचने लगी कि यदि मैं कोख नही बँधवाऊँगी तो सासू नाराज होगी ऐसा विचार कर ननद के बदले में छोटी भाभी ने अपनी कोख बँधवा ली। 


इसके बाद जब उससे जो लडका होता तो सात दिन बार मर जाता। एक दिन उसने पंडित को बुलाकर पूछा मेरी संतान सातवें दिन क्यो मर जाती है? तब पंडित ने कहा कि तुम सुरही गाय की पूजा करो। सुरही गाय स्याहु माता की भायली है वह तेरी कोख तब मेरा बच्चा जियेगा। इसके बाद से वह बहु प्रातः काल उठकर चुपचाप सुरही गाय के नीचे सफाई आदि कर जाती है। गौ माता बोली कि आजकल कौन मेरी सेवा कर रहा है। सो आज देखूँगी। गौ माता खूब तडके उठी, क्या देखती है कि एक साहूकार के बेटे की बहू उसके नीचे सफाई आदि कर रही है। गौ माता उससे बोली मैं तेरी सेवा से प्रसन्न हूँ। इच्छानुसार जो चाहे माँग लो। तब साहूकर की बहू बोली कि स्याऊ माता तुम्हारी भायली है और उसने मेरी कोख बाँध रखी है सो मेरी कोख खुलवा दो। गौ माता ने कहा अच्छा। अब तो गौ माता समुद्र पार अपनी भायली के पास उसको लेकर चली। 

रास्ते में कडी धूप थी सो वो दोनो एक पेड़ के नीचे गरूड़ पंखानी(पक्षी) का बच्चा था। साँप उसको डसने लगा तब साहुकार की बहू ने साँप मारकर ढाल के नीचे दबा दिया और बच्चो का बचा लिया थोडी देर मे गरूड पंखनी आई जो वहा खून पड़ा देखकर साहूकार की बहू को चोंच मारने लगी। तब साहूकारनी बोली कि मैने तेरे बच्चो को नही मारा बल्कि साँप मेरे बच्चे को डसने को आया था मैने तो उससे तेरे बच्चे की रक्षा की है। यह सुनकर गरूड पंखनी बोली कि माँग तू क्या माँगती है? वह बोली सात समुद्र पर स्याऊ माता के पास पहुँचा दे। गरूड पंखनी ने दोनो को अपनी पीठ पर बैठाकर स्याऊ माता के पास पहुचा दिया।

स्याऊ माता उन्हे देखकर बोली कि बहन बहुत दिनो मे आई, फिर कहने लगी कि बहन मेरे सिर में जूँ पड गई। तब सुरही के कहने पर साहुकार की बहु ने सलाई से उनकी जुएँ निकाल दी। इस पर स्याऊ माता प्रसन्न हो बोली कि तुने मेरे सिर मे बहुत सलाई डाली है इसलिये सात बेटे और बहु होगी। वह बोली मेरे तो एक भी बेटा नही है सात बेटा कहाँ से होगे। स्याऊ माता बोली- वचन दिया, वचन से फिरूँ तो धोबी कुण्ड पर कंकरी होऊँ। जब साहुकार की बहु बोली मेरी कोख तो तुम्हारे पास बन्द पडी है यह सुनकर स्याऊ माता बोली कि तुने मुझे बहुत ठग लिया, मैं तेरी कोख खोलती नही परन्तु अब खोलनी पडेगी। जा तेरे घर तुझे सात बेटे और सात बहुए मिलेगी तू जाकर उजमन करियो। सात अहोई बनाकर सात कढाई करियो। 

वह लौटकर घर आई तो देखा सात बेटे सात बहुए बैठी है वह खुश होगई। उसने सात अहोई बनाई, साज उजमन किए तथा सात कढाई की। रात्रि के समय जेठानियाँ आपस मे कहने लगी कि जल्दी जल्दी नहाकर पूजा कर लो, कही छोटी बच्चो को याद करके रोने लग। थोडी देर में उन्होने अपने बच्चो से कहा- अपनी चाची के घर जाकर देख आओ कि वह आज अभी तक रोई क्यो नही। बच्चो ने जाकर कहा कि चाची तो कुछ माडँ रही है खूब उजमन हो रहा है। यह सूनते ही जेठानियो दौडी-दौडी उसके घर आई और जाकर कहने लगी कि तूने कोख कैसे छुडाई? वह बोली तुमने तो कोख बधाई नही सो मैने कोख खोल दी है। 

स्याऊ माता ने कृपा करके मेरी कोख खोली उसी प्रकार हमारी भी खोलियो। कहने वाले तथा सुनने वाले की तथा सब परिवार की कोख खोलियो।

श्री अहोई अष्टमी व्रत कथा 





किसी नगर में साहूकार रहता था उसके सात पुत्र थे। एक दिन उसकी पत्नी खदान में से खोदकर मिट्टी लाने गई। ज्योंही उसने मिट्टी खोदने के लिए कुगाल चलाई त्योंही उसमें रह रहे स्याऊ के बच्चे प्रहार से आहत होकर मृत हो गए।

जब साहूकार की पत्नी ने स्याऊ को रक्तरंजित देखा तो उसे बच्चों मर जाने का अत्यधिक दुख  हुआ। परन्तु जो कुछ होना था वह हो चुका था। यह भूल उससे अनजाने में हो गई थी। अतः दुखी मन से वह घर लौट आई। पश्चाताप के कारण वह मिट्टी भी नहीं लाई

इसके बाद जब स्याऊ घर आई तो उसने अपने बच्चों को मृतावस्था में पाया। वह दुःख से कातर होकर विलाप करने लगी। उसने ईश्वर से प्रार्थना की, कि जिसने भी मेरे बच्चों को मारा है उसे भी पुत्र शोक भुगतना पड़े।
इधर स्याऊ के शाप से एक वर्ष के अन्दर ही सेठानी के सातों पुत्र काल कलवित हो गए।

इस प्रकार की दुःखद घटना देखकर सेठ-सेठानी दोनों अत्यन्त शोकाकुल  हो गए। उस दम्पत्ति ने किसी तीर्थस्थान पर जाकर अपने प्राणों का विसर्जन कर देने का मन में संकल्प लिया। मन में ऐसा निश्चय कर सेठ-सेठानी पैदल ही तीर्थ की ओर चल पड़े। जब तक उन दोनों का शरीर बिल्कुल अशक्त हो गया  तब तक वे बराबर आगे बढ़ते रहे। जब वे चलने में बिल्कुल असमर्थ हो गए तो वे मूर्छित होकर गिर पड़े।

उन दोनों की इस दयनीय दशा को देखकर दयानधि भगवान उन पर दयार्द्र हो गए और आकाश वाणी की - " हे सेठ,तेरी सेठानी ने मिट्टी खोदते सममय अनजाने में ही सेही के बच्चों को मारा डाला था, इसलिए तुझे भी अपने बच्चों का कष्ट सहना पड़ा।

भगवान ने आज्ञा दी अब तुम दोनों घर जा कर गाय की सेवा करो और अहोई अष्टमी आने पर विधि विधान पूर्वक प्रेम से अहोई माता की पूजा करो। सभी जीवों पर दया भाव रखो किसी का अहित करो। यदि तुम  मेरे कहे अनुसार आचरण करगे तो तुम्हें संतान सुख प्राप्त हो जायेगा।"

यह सुन कर सेठ-सेठानी को कुछ धैर्य हुआ और वे दोनों भगवती का स्मरण करते हुए अपने घर की ओर चल पड़े। घर पहुँच कर उन दोनों ने आकश वाणी के अनुसार कार्य करना आरम्भ कर दिया। इसके साथ ही ईर्ष्या-द्वेष की भावना से रहित होकर सभी प्राणियों पर करुणा का भाव रखना प्रारम्भ कर दिया।

भगवती की कृपा से सेठ सेठानी पुनः पुत्रवान हो कर सभी सुखों का भोग करने लगे और अंतकाल में स्वर्ग गामी हुए।

People from different parts of North India celebrate the fast with a few variations. But broadly the following method is followed to observe the fast and prayer.

Method to observe Ahoi Ashtami Vrat



Ahoi Puja, or Ahoi Ashtami Vrat, is observed by mothers on the eighth day during the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of Kartik month in North India. Puja and fasting dedicated to Ahoi Mata is the main observance on the day, which falls before Diwali. The fast begins at sunrise and ends with the sighting of moon or star. Here is a simple step by step guide to how to observe Ahoi Vrat.

 
* The fasting is from morning to sighting of moon or stars in the night sky.

* Mothers wake up before sunrise, and have some refreshment.

* Then proceed to the temple to offer prayers for their children.

* After the morning prayers, mothers do their normal work.


 * Most women in the neighborhood gather for the puja in the afternoon or an hour or so before sunset for the Ahoi Puja.

* A painting of Ahoi mata is made on the wall or a picture or idol is placed in the Puja room.

* Water in a pitcher or bowl or jug is placed on the left of the picture of Ahoi mata.An untwisted red colored thread is wrapped around the bowl of water and the edges are smeared with turmeric and kumkum powder.


* Locally available Grains are placed on a tray or plate and are kept in front of the picture of Ahoi mata.
 

* Prasad or food offerings that are made are also placed in front of the idol. The Prasad made include pooris, halwa, sweets, boiled channa or jowar.

* Some people also place the money intended to be distributed before the photo of Ahoi Mata. The money is given to children or the poor after the puja.



* There is also an important tradition of making garland using coins or currency notes by some families. Some people make garland using something very unique that is found in the region or something that is important to the family. Some families also have the tradition of making a garland with silver coins or small silver balls. They keep adding to this garland when a child is born in the family or a son gets married. Every year the Ahoi Mata picture is adorned with this garland and this tradition is passed on to future generations. Some people make a new garland each year; others make a new garland if something highly auspicious happened in the family during the year.


* Once all the puja items are ready, women listen to the Ahoi Ashtami Vrat katha from an elderly lady. Those mothers doing the puja either listen to the story on audio or CD or read the story.

* Once the star or moon is spotted, an aarti is performed before the portrait of Ahoi Mata. Women pray for a couple of minutes or mediate before Ahoi Mata. They pray for the well being and long life of their children.

* The fast is broken by eating some Prasad. The Prasad is also shared with family members, children and neighbours.

Udyapan (Conclusion) of Ahoi Ashtami Vrat:

* The lady who does not have a son or her son is not getting married should necessarily do Udyapan of this fast.

* For this, in a plate, four Puri with Halwa are kept at seven places.

* Additionally, yellow colored sari, blouse and money is offered to the mother-in-law. 

* Her mother-in-law should keep the outfit with her and distributed the eatables that is Halwa, Puri among the neighbours. 

* Or, send it to the house of some other girl.


 उद्यापन या उजमन:

 जिस स्त्री के बेटा अथवा बेटी का विवाह हुआ हो, उसे अहोई माता का उजमन करना चाहिए |
 

* एक थाल में चार - चार पूड़ियां सात जगह रखें| फिर उन पर थोड़ा - थोड़ा हलवा रख दें |
 

* थाल में एक साड़ी, ब्लाउज  और सामर्थ्य के अनुसार रूपए रख कर, 

थाल के चारो ओर हाथ फेरकर सासू जी के चरण स्पर्श करें तथा उसे सादर उन्हें दें | 

(या किसी ब्राह्मण को भी दे सकती हैं)

* सासूजी तीयल व रूपए स्वयं रख लें एवं हलवा पूरी प्रसाद के रूप में बाँट दें |

* हलवा पूरी का बायना बहन बेटी के यहाँ भी भेजना चाहिए |


* इस दिन पंडितों को पेठा दान करने से शुभ फल की प्राप्ति होती है ।
