Story of Anant Chaturdashi

According to old epics, Pandavas were defeated by Kauravas in a gambling game and they got an exile of 12 years. One day lord Krishna came to see Pandavas. Yudhisthir that day told the whole story to him and asked the remedy from that hardship. Sri Krishna then told him to observe the fast of lord Anant which will help him to get his lost kingdom back. Lord Krishna also told him a story. The story is as follows:--

There was a Brahmin called Sumant in ancient times. This Brahmin had a daughter whose name was Sushila. Brahmin married Sushila with sage Kaudinya when she reached the marriageable age. Sage Kaudinya took Sushila and went towards his home. The night grew up while they both were walking. The sage started doing evening prayers at the bank of the river. Sushila then saw that a lot of women were worshipping a god there. She went to the women and asked them that whom they were worshipping. Those women told her about the significance of fast for the worship of lord Anant. Sushila also decided to observe this fast when she came to know about this fast and came to sage Kaudinya after tying the thread of 14 Knots on her arm.

Kaudinya asked the mystery behind the thread tied on Sushila’s arm and Sushila told the whole story to him. After listening to all this, Kaudinya broke the thread and threw it in fire. This resulted in dishonour of lord Anant because of which the sage was not able to stay happy ever and his whole wealth finished. Then, Sushila reminded him of the Anant thread. The sage then regretted his act and went to forest in the search of that thread. He fell on land while searching for the thread. Then, lord Anant appeared in front of him and said that he faced a lot of problems since

he had dishonoured him. He told him to go back home and asked him to observe the fast for 14 years. It will eliminate all his pains and he will become wealthy and prosperous again.

Dharmaraj(Yudhishtira) wants to know now who this Ananta represents; whether he is Aadishesha or takshaka, or Brahma. Lord Krishna replies that Ananta is none other than He Himself; ananta is the endless time. you can call him Hari, Vishnu, Krishna, shiva, Surya, Adishesha or Brahma. Having resided in the hearts of all creatures, and assuming different avataar for protecting the good and punishing the wicked, I am that parmeshwar Himself. In me reside all the 14 lokas, 14 indras, 12 adityas, 11 rudras, 8 vasus, 7 rishis, the earth and the sky, rivers and mountains. Saying thus the Lord displays his vishwarupa to Dharmaraja.

* untie the thread and keep under the Peepal tree, (or)
* keep in a Tulsi plant, (or)
* put it in a flowing river ( visarjan).

* NEVER DO THIS ON THURSDAYS.

On Anant Chaturdashi Ganesh Mahotsav ends and Ganpati Visarjan takes place.

Anant Chaturdashi is Ganesh festival’s last day. On this day the idol of Ganapati is immersed in river, lake or sea which is also known as Ganapati Visarjan. This festival is celebrated mainly in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat in India. The festival falls on the fourteenth day of Bhadrapad month and is observed on the tenth day after Ganesh Chaturthi. Both males and females wear a sacred thread of Anant Chaudas round the neck, arm or sometimes tie it at the main entrance of their homes. It is believed that by doing this Lord Ganesh will bless them with prosperity, happiness and wealth while leaving the house and will take away all their sorrows and miseries.
